71' 9.5HP johnson tiller problems

This is my first post here, but I'd just like to say this is where I've come every time I've had a motor problem and cant believe some of the knowledge the members here possess off the top of there heads.

So on to my problem... Long story short I needed a new gear and shaft for my tiller handle. It kept locking up and I ended up losing it in the lake. So after finding out this part was no longer in production, I found one on ebay(or so I think, they said it was the same part number I was looking for, but how can I be sure its right????. It looks the same) So anyways it arrived today, went out and put it on and it doesnt seem to fit. When I screw it in with the screw at the top of the tiller, the gear and shaft just move freely around and doesnt stay in contact with the gear that operates the trottle. I also noticed that it doesnt seem to be as far down as the previous handle was once screwed in( I can tell this from the wear and tear marks and the new paint that is now visible). So any suggestions here? Is there a trick for putting these in, do I have the wrong part? It seems like the shaft itself should be thicker to prevent movement from just coming out of contact with the gears, but at the same time its longer since I cant get the white plastic handle down as far. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks guys.

there is a sping and washer inside the tiller handle, that holds pressure on the gears. also you may have the wrong part.

I'm pretty sure the design changed late 60's, reconfirm your parts to make sure it's the proper fit.

Is there a way to tell if its the right part? Or somewhere I could get the dimensions on this part. Sure stinks, not knowing whether I have the right part or if I'm just doing something wrong.

I have to say it is really hard to follow your description. You can look here and compare the part from year to year. I would be surprised if it ever changed but you never know. Do you know what year the new part is from? Anyway, have a look here and maybe you will see that more than one part fell into the lake. Best of luck. Rick.

I think I solved the problem here, see what you guys think. The shaft itself that keeps wobbling off the gear going into the motor is because the hole it runs through on the bottom of the tiller handle is too big, or so I think this is the problem. Is there some bushings it looks like from the schematic that go over the shaft to hold it tight in this hole on the underside of the tiller?

I lost the whole shaft in the lake for messing with that screw that holds it in, so its possible that if there were bushings in that hole they fell in too.

Attached is a link to the diagram. I ordered part number 14, do I need part 12 & 13 to make this gear and shaft work? Its hard to tell from the diagram, but this would make sense if it was the case because it would hold the gear in place and keep it from coming off the gear running into the motor.

Yes those parts are essential. Take a good look at the diagram and order each and every part your missing. They are all necessary for proper operation. I don't understand exactly how this handle would fall off. No matter how much you turned the idle adjustment knob that should not happen. Make sure all the other fasteners are in place before you place your order. Rick.
