miloman, lower unit ,if oil looks milky , likely has a seal leaking.Possible water leaks are propshaft seal, driveshaft seal(under waterpump),shiftrod seal, and fill and vent screws. Most likely prop shaft seal. Also, insure seal washers on fill and vent screws are in good condition and sealing. As for the idle speed being too high and screw out of adjustment range, try adjusting trunion nut on throttle cable in engine compartment.

Not too hard to replace propshaft seals if you have the right tools.Remove prop.Obtain 3/8 drive w/long extension to reach bolts retaining lower unit seal carrier.Measure from end of propshaft to inner lip of seal carrier to determine lenghth as you'll need a 3 jaw puller with long reversible jaws to pull seal carrier.Local dealer should have all of the parts you need to perform job.If doing yourself and are not familiar with procedure I highly recommend getting a service manual specific to your motor.Don't know what shop would charge for seal replacement but I suspect somewhere around $250 smackers. On a motor of that vintage ,if you are uncertain as to when cooling system was last serviced, I highly recommend waterpump and thermostat replacement.Waterpump kit at dealer is around $60.Good Luck

well thanks I adjusted the idle. Idles around 700 to 800 rpms with no real sputer removed the prop no fishing line connected it to the mufflers and ran it once finished I pulled the plug on my lower unit and saw that it was slightly milky so what could this leak be coming from any advice I would like to get as specific as possible so that I cna repair the problem thanks

miloman,

Don't discount the fact that your fill and drain screw seals may be leaking. Very few people change these. They should be changed whenever the screws are loosened.

You can get a handful of them for $5.00

so what you are saying is that I should change all the seals regardless. is there a way of determining where the leak is from other then a pressure test

miloman,Sometimes if the propshaft seals are leaking there will be indication of lower unit oil around area of seal when out of water.Observe closely around propshaft seal. You can perform air test for leaks ,however if driveshaft seal or shift rod seal is leaking you won't be able to determine from test as to which one is .And, of course , if you go to the trouble of removing unit to inspect you might just as well change them anyway along with waterpump.fact is , if the oil is milky , you got a leak.Good starting point is fill and vent screw washers and propshaft seal.Take this with a grain of salt as I don't have the luxury of seeing unit first hand.If anyone could say which seal for sure is leaking it would simply be crapshoot at best. You know now that there are four possible causes and two probable. That's the best I can do.Good Luck.

miloman,

All I was saying is that you can replace those two seals for about $0.75 and if the fluid remains pure-you're a genius!! :D

so what your saying john is that even though the boat isnot submurged into water the drain hole gasket could still be leaking

miloman,

Again, all I'm saying is that those are cheap and easy to try. Yes, you can get water in the lower unit by running it on the "muffs". Some muffs cover the fill screw.

Re: 70's 2 cylinder 50 hp evinrude lower unit help

miloman,
So you're saying that you replaced the screw seals and ran it on Muffs and it still got water in the lower unit? That seems very strange, as the only place would be the screws where water could enter under those conditions. Now if you ran it in the Water or in a container, I can see that. More info, please.

Check for small crack, if you already have not done so, in the Lower Unit Housing. I suggest this as you said it hit when you pulled it out. Look Closely!

miloman, One more time.If you changed fill screw washers along with lower unit oil and stll get water in lower unit, while fushing, you have a leaking seal on driveshaft or shift rod (in lower unit). The cavity where they reside is engulfed with water while flushing.Whether you spend the time or money to get it repaired is a decission you'll have to make. The fill screw washers and propshaft seals will only leak if motor is submerged or or subjected to untold amounts of water when not in use.

now as isaid earlier the idle lever seems out of place also could it be that when I impacted the bottom on the ramp I also pused the driveshaft a bit causeing the idle screw to be misaligned and that the leak is in fack coming from the driveshaft seal I notice that it reves high when put from gear to nutreul but i have to push the idle lever all the way down and it settles down does this help
