70hp Johnson oil/fuel question

I just picked up an '81 Chaparral with a 1999 Johnson 70hp oil-injected motor (thread with pics here) and had a couple of questions about information the previous owner gave me.

First, he said he added oil to the fuel as per mfr specs because he didn't trust the oiling system (also regularly filled the oil tank). This seems not right to me, wouldn't too much oil affect how the motor runs?

Also, he recommended I disconnect the fuel line after each use and run it out of fuel. I see the point in this but wanted to make sure there weren't any issues with this. He demonstrated and then primed it with the fuel line bulb and it fired right back up, just wanted to make sure.

Sure these will be the first of many questions as this is my first boat, any tips/tricks for these motors would also be greatly appreciated!

Re: 70hp Johnson oil/fuel question

Any input on this? From what I've read it's basically been over oiled it's whole life, assuming this may have gunked up the motor some so I'll check into that when I do maintenance. I went ahead and added oil to the fuel at a 50:1 ratio when I took it out last weekend, it ran great but did seem to smoke quite a bit. Think i might try straight gas on the next tank...

Its a VRO2 system.

Run it with 50:1 premix while you satisfy yourself that the VRO is injecting the correct amount of oil. If it isn't then you have two choices. Disable the VRO and just run on premix or fix the VRO and forget the premix.
If it is using the correct amount then you can forget the premix and enjoy less smoky boating

It is very definitely recommended that you do not run multiple carb systems out of gas.
The reason given is that the top carb will run out before the lower one(s) and result in the top cylinder(s) running with no oil.
I do it with a single carb but even that is criticised by some.

yep,way over oiled.which could cause a carbon buildup. As other poster mentioned, use either or method not both.I understand the guys concern of the VRO system, for simplicity to myself ,I disconnected my VRO systems and always put my oil in my gas when I fueled.Been doin it long before VRO.i would also suggest you run some seafoam through your engine and do a de-carb.running a 25-1 oil must certainly cause some carbon build up ,poor idleing, and lots of smoke
