700 Merc. Stator 1976

I think I recieved the wrong stator. The old one looks like it had 8 poles and the new one has 6. I have spark and fuel but the motor will not run or fire up at all.. Will the wrong stator throw the timing off? 1977 not 1976.

Only on a CDM style will it have a effect..

CDM? Is that Battery CD Ignition without points? That is what I have.
