70 johnson carb adjustment

ive got a 1990 70 johnson. When i turn the idle mixture srew out does that richen or lean the mixture. Its hard to tell while adjusting them. my carbs are about 1 1/2 turns out engine idles good but smells really rich and plugs are black. i know alittle rich is better than lean but i don't want to overdo it. thanks

the more you back it out the richer the mixture. sounds like heavy float or incorrect float level

if you can smell it,its probably running rich.
