70 hp will not die

i have a 2000 70 hp johnson outboard that will not die when the key is removed. i replaced the ignition thinking that it was old and needed to be replaced but still with the new ignition it wont stop running until i flood it using the electronic choke only down fall to this method is that i end up with a cloud of blue smoke when i start up.

hope you kept the old keyswitch, never know when you'll need a spare.

the kill circuit is a black/yellow wire originating at the powerpack. To shut off the motor, the kill wire is connected to ground which short circuits the powerpack, shutting off spark.

that black/yellow wire has developed an open-circuit fault somewhere between the powerpack and the keyswitch. if your dash gauges have stopped working, it's more likely a fault in the ground wire. if you have an emergency lanyard which also won't shut off the motor, then the fault must be upstream of the control box.

i took your advise and looked over the wiring and i found a short. i repaired the wire and now the engine turns off like it should.
