70 hp water cerculation problem I think

hi guys, I just bought a 1977 Johnson 70HP motor and this is the first for me so new to boats al together. I just got it running and I dont think it is moving water like it should at least i dont think. Correct me if I'm wrong but I am thinking water should be coming out the 2 holes in the back just below the lower cover? I do remember digging som crap like a small nest of some sort from it. If it is what should I do to correct it?

Is water coming out the "**** tube" I have a 70 horse Evinrude/Johnson and it has the exhaust port and the **** tube....

Those ports are idle relief ports, basically the exhaust can escape there when at idle or low speed when the exhaust gas pressure is low. Helps to keep idle low and smooth. There is a pee tube near the rear starboard corner of the engine housing in the lower housing near the seem between the top and bottom. This needs to be keep clear. Usually mud daubbers or leaf cutters plug them.

Also since the engine is new to you, you should replace the impeller. This is required every 2 years or sooner in sandy/muddy water.
It may just be that the impeller is shot.

as i am looking at the rear of the engine the port on the left is blowing air and the one on the right starboard has dirty looking water seeping but not blowing. I really didn' run it that long just wondering if i didnt run it long enough for the thermostat to open or if it even has a thermostat. The only thing as far as a pee tube that has water shooting out is toward the bow just above the lower unit seem.

I am fairly certain that the 70773s (1977 70hp) is not equipped with a tell-tale stream (aka, pee hole). Unless one was installed by a previous owner.

Like others have mentioned, the two rear facing ports on the midsection, below the cowling are exhaust ports. This motor has no visible water discharge.

There is a thermostat and you can see its placement on this exploded diagram. It is #37

If you decide to keep that motor you should make your own peehole it is really easy to do and there's detailed instructions around here someplace.

thanks guys one other question do i really need a thermostat I have read somewhere that they have removed it as it could be a potential failure point and it works just fine. Just an idea to throw out there. I will be searching for the make your own pee hole thread if their is one

you need the thermostat, it's there for a reason.
