I have a 70 hp 1983 Johnson with no fire cold. if you crank it for several minutes it will start firing. there is a terminal block on the side of the motor all the wires have power while cranking and no fire. I have disconnected the big red bullet connector. removed the plugs and have a remote starter switch and gap spark tester hooked up. have hard wired the power pack cleaned the ground to the power pack. once it starts it will run fine all day. let it cool off and it my or may not start. looking for a wiring diagram to tell me what the coil wires should read while cranking I have a manual but its newer than my motor. Usually the problem is the other way around, you loose spark when warm.
You might want to invest in the factory manual so you can trouble shoot the ignition system. It sounds like you have an electrical component that is malfunctioning cold.

turns out I had a timing base with an open coil that would heat up and start working.
