I have a 1976 evinrude 70 and the lower unit is cracked when i got it but it runs perfect. There is a guy selling a 1985 evinrude 70 as a parts motor. My question is will the lower unit bolt up and the shaft spline the same?

I'm pretty sure they went from the large gearcase to the small gearcaese in 1983. Your '76 has the large gearcase. That 1985 has a small gearcase. Not compatible as far as I have been told.

Can you not have the LU welded?

according to the parts breakdown in 85 it could have a large or small gearcase......my 84 has a large gearcase so 83 wouldn't have been the changeover.

I strongly suggest you verify that it is an 85 and also what gearcase it has.

Heck if you are getting a 1985 model and it just has low compression, find the problem causing the low compression, could be as simple as a head gasket, it's worth checking it out, you may have a cheap fix on a newer motor.
