Just picked up 83 Bass Cat with a 70hp Evinrude outboard. Boat was sitting off and on for past 3 years. Dumped existing fuel out of tank and added clean fuel and replaced spark plugs. Put on new battery and motor fired right up. Took to lake and had some starting problems , but with idle arm up seemed to fire ok. Dropped into forward and eased the throttle up for speed. Was doing fine at about 1800 rpms, but at 2000 it dropped suddenly and died. Restarted and it happened again. Next time I got to the 1800 rpms and instead of easing into more I pushed throttle all the way. This time it hesitated then surged passed the 2000 rpm mark and was off and running. After an hour of running motor I again eased into 2000 rpms and once again the motor bogged down. Any thoughts on why it happens at that time? TIA

Welcome to iboats.

It sounds like your carbs need rebuilding. Something is restricted in there, probably the main jets. Do all three. If there's varnish in one, there's varnish in all three. You should just need gaskets and float valves. You can get kits, but most of the parts aren't needed unless the carbs are extremely bad. The motor runs, so they're not that bad.

Anytime I pick up a used motor it gets three things automatically...new sparkplugs, fresh gearlube, and a water pump rebuild. Good luck with your new toy!

Thanks for speedy response. Will take the advise. One thing I did not mention that for some reason it idles fine at 2000 rpms and both lower and higher rpms. Only when the prop is engaged does it "bogg" down.
