Re: 7.4 Mercruiser running hot at rpm and burning up exhaust boots

wow that was weird because the second paragraph read like it was some sort of my owm alter ego. Lol

I tend to over think, design, and just over due in general too, but have learned to slow it down some over the last few years.

Hence my hesitation to jump in and start drilling holes in my boat, and also the attempt to get any and all avail info right down to the exact best spot to drill.

Actually still have not decided on that spot yet lol.

Update

Sorry to bring this thread back, but been busy with other non boat issues and am just getting back to this (and hopefully will have it finished in time to finally get in a full season lol)

Well I do have all the parts I think I need now. The clam shell type pick up, sea ****, 1" to 1-1/4" elbow, hose clamps, and even a tube of over priced 3m 4200 to seal it all up, and of course what I think are the right sized bits, hole saw, thread sealant etc etc. I decided against the strainer for the initial instal, and will see how it works out and then decide on it later on.

Where I am stumped is in two areas, and really need some help.

First is where to mount the through hull? Should I try and get it between the stringers in front of the engine where it may be cramped, but could fit and still be out of direct line to the prop? Or would it be OK to mount outside the stringer slightly to starboard? Would more forward or rearward towards the transom be preferred?

I am thinking more towards the transom and just outside of the stringer supporting the engine. This would put it behind the pump inlet and more inline with the original hose path to the old drive pick up, keep it further away from causing any turbulence problems or prop wash, but also I am not sure if it would be outward towards the starboard side enough to cause issues when turning while on plane?

Also trying to not make future repairs pure hell by putting it directly in the way of a starter removal, or when the impeller in the pump needs changing. Currently there is a lot of room in the engine compartment for a boat this size, and I would prefer to keep the ease of accessing everything if possible.

The other issue is what to do with the original water intake set up from the drive? I have researched this a bit and see some just say cut the hose on the outside of the gimbal assy and install a block off where the hose used to connect on the inside of the boat leading to the pump, and others talk about installing some kind of tee fitting and leaving both intakes in use (this one scares me due to the potential of sucking air from the original through the gimbal hose that has a hole outside of the assy) and also even found another thread here where it was shown that Merc suggests in a bulletin to use a Y fitting that will use both inlets but this was for a full closed cooling system upgrade so may not be needed.

I am also wanting to install a fitting to allow flushing and running on land on a garden hose, and am not sure how many tee's and fittings I can add without creating new problems.

Any and all your thoughts are welcomed, and thanks in advance for helping to possibly finally get this boat in ship shape and running like it should!!
