Re: UPDATE...OVERHEATING....1994 Yamaha 225 saltwater series 76?

July 3rd - boat FINALLY arrived back in the driveway today so the problems could be dealt with.

The motor STARTS FINE - the oil IS making it's way from the onboard tank to the motor :D

Son said that the primer bulb - which he "thought" was firm, now is what he might call "getting squishy".

 OVERHEATING seems now to be a problem = BOTH the stats and alarms are new. Waterpump was rebuilt last summer, and a visual inspection of the impeller - it looks like new.

By overheating - I mean that even sitting in the driveway, w/the muffs/hose connected and running for under 5 min. the alarms sound.

Am also perusing this topic thru the "search" method here.

While using "search", we've found that a common thing to look for seems to be the "pressure control valve". If this engine does have one - I'd like to know what we're looking for - we can't seem to find it on our handy/dandy SELOC Yahama 1984-96 Repair Book.

the valve you are looking for is at the bottom of the exhaust chamber cooling plate (its the big plate between the two heads under the computer box) the valve cover will have a 1 inch hose connected to it leading to below the power head. look below the computer box, two bolts retain the valve cover, check the spring inside and the plastic valve aswell.......the valve seals against a rubber ring..........if spring is ok clean and inspect the valve and rubber ring also clean any built up scale or corrosion in the valve housing that might cause restricted movement of the valve....remember if the valve sticks open no water will get to the top of the block to flow through the thermostats...the valve HAS to move freely in the housing when to much pressure builds up, then when it dumps and the pressure drops, the spring needs to be able to push the valve back on the rubber seal easily with no restriction:):).....hope this solves your problem.
Happy boating:):)

Today DS took it apart - as described above, cleaned a bit of weedy debris - put it back together, and not only did the alarms NOT SOUND, the water discharged at a MUCH FASTER / STRONGER flow - all while in the driveway.

Hopefully sea trial this week, and will update further :D
