hi
my johnson 6hp twin cut out ten yards from the shore so i bought it home and took the float bowl of and blew it all out with carb cleaner, when i put it together i noticed it dosnt pump fuel when i pull the starter, should it? i put a new pump on, which is slightly "deeper" but didnt make any difference. any help would be appreciated but my main ? are should it pump fuel when you spin it over (like a car does) and does it matter that they sold me a slightly different pump? cheers:confused:

I think the pump works off of engine vacuum. It should pump when the engine spins over. Check for a good seal at the vac port. Pull the fuel hose off at the carb, spin the engine and see if you get fuel.

If I'm incorrect, someone with more knowledge will correct me :p

#1 there are many 6 hp Johnson. what do you have? what else have you tested? spark, compression, complete carb cleaning, using a rebuild kit?

When you pump the fuel line bulb fuel should be pumped through the fuel pump and fill the carb bowl.
That should provide enough fuel for the motor to start and to run for a couple of minutes at idle.

Check that operating the bulb that fuel is infact getting through to the carb ( by pulling the hose off) and also that it is filling the bowl.

If no fuel is getting through then you have to look at the fuel pump.

You may find the two items on rebuilding the fuel pumps HERE helpful

Not trying to be a smart*ss, but you need to be a bit more specific so we can help you. And is there a history? It's run well for you all season, or you just got the motor recently?

Were you starting out...or coming back when the engine quit "10 yards from the shore"? So, had the motor run well for a while, or did it quit right after you started up?

If it quit right away, you may be lucky and it is one of the simple fuel glitches. Vent not open, double-disconnect fuel line connected with bulb backwards, contaminated fuel etc.
Try a known good tank and hose to eliminate those.

Some pics might help us identify the year...cowl on, cowl off from several angles.

How did you discover it wasn't pumping when you pull the rope?

If you tested it by pulling the rope with the pump outlet disconnected, did you prime the line using the primer bulb first?

I'm not saying I've ever did that before, but I'm not saying I haven't.......good job checking back in to let us know the resolution -- somebody else will learn from that...

cheers!
