6hp johno dog replacement

i just tried to get the clutch dog on my old 6hp johnson out, i got the lower cover (skeg?) of but couldnt remove the shaft that carries the gears out because of the shift rod. the manual says the power head has to come of to remove this rod, is this right? sounds a bit extreme. sorry i dont know the year because the plate has been removed and i havnt been able to find the number on the core plug listed (a0603527)

Pull the pin out of the shift cradle, this should release the cradle from the shift rod then the shaft should come out.

i had the cradle off but the shaft just rattled around, wouldnt actualy come out?

Probably stuck, block of wood and a hammer should tap it out. You did remove the skeg revealing the gears and shaft correct?

Have you seperated the lower unit from the exhaust housing or are you saying that you just removed the lower casing from the gearcase?

yes ive just removed the bottom case.
i dont think its stuck as i rattles around (loose) just cant get it out

Just doing this over the weekend, yes in most cases you will have to remove the powerhead in order to remove the lower unit. The black/white photo shows a picture of a '68 unit with a disconnect inbetween the exhaust housing and the lower unit. If yours is like this then you are lucky and won't have to remove the powerhead.

I'm still not understanding why all this has to be taken apart to remove a prop shaft. Skeg comes off, disconnect the cradle and remove the prop shaft with the gears, what am I missing, i've done several this way of the same design?

In those pictures I posted you do not have to tear it down as far as I have, those were just parts left over from my powerhead swap that I used for illustration. I was simply answering the question of lower end removal. Powerhead removal only takes a few minutes. As far as prop shaft removal, it's been way too long since having one apart for me to answer that question.

thats what i want to hear, have you got any idea why i couldnt get the shaft out though? by the "craddle" you mean the bit that engages the clutch dog? after i disconected this i ended up with a shaft that was loose but the shift rod still seemed in the way and i couldnt see a way of getting in out without removing this rod, which i believe would require the p-head to come of. your saying youve done it without, and it does seem extreme to have to tear it right down, so ill have another look. any advice moste appreciated. cheers to all

ok, i was being stupid as usual. drop the entire lower unit down, disconect shift rod, remove lower unit, slide shift rod down a bit and the propelor shaft will come out, turn the clutch dog round and hey presto im back on the plane.
