Just replaced the rings honed the cylinders, new power head gasket set. The head showed signs of being run hot. Motor idles fine but when you let it get warmed up the bottom cylinder is taking in water. ??????? Bad head?

Take the head back off and get a flat piece of glass (8 x 10 or so), lay a piece of 400 sand paper on the glass and sand the head using figure 8 motion until the entire machine surface is shiny. Then replace it, and double check the torque sequence. Very common problem and most of the time it's an easy fix (other than all the sanding). Another tip would be, after re-installing the head and running the motor up to operating temp, shut her down, let it cool a bit, and then re-torque the head bolts. Good luck with it, that's a great motor you've got there!

Re: 69 johnson 20hp

The torque sequence should be something like this; start from a "center" bolt, don't tighten fully, just good and snug, move up to the right, then over to the left, then down through the center to the bottom right, then to the bottom left and back to the center. Visulaize a figure "8". Do this twice and on the second go around, bring them up to the right torque.
