So it starts fine once warmed up. However it starts in reverse and neutral does not work. Mechanic said solenoids in lower unit don't have enough resistance, 2 ohms instead of 5-6. Got another lower unit. Mechanic also said there power being supplied from somewhere that it won't shut off the voltage going to the solenoid forcing it to be in gear when starting. If anyone knows abut about the circuitry with these motors your input would be greatly appreciated.

Pull the flywheel.-----Inspect anti reversing spring.----Inspect drive key on bottom of rotor.-----Motor is always in FOWARD when not running.-----With 12 volts applied to green wire it shifts to NEUTRAL after just 1 turn of the flywheel.

Here I would simply take the lower unit apart for inspection , repair as needed and re-assembly.-----No manual needed and no need to buy any parts.-----These units are simple , well engineered and reliable.----Your location ?

I'm located in guelph, they don't seem that simple when the shifting solenoids go way down into the gear chamber.

why not just apply B+ and Grd on blue-green see how it turns then revers polarity and see how it truns
the remove power to the lu see how it goes in defaulut

if all ok problem is top side not LU

Ok, the solenoid wires ate kind of frayed where it inserts to the solenoid so the newer lower unit I got has goot wires n a working solenoid.
I'd like to keep my lower unit. Is there anything I should be aware of when replacing the solenoid.

Check post#2. Those motors can actually RUN backwards. The anti-reverse spring prevents that, and is subject to wear (a regular maintenance item)

Takes about two seconds see if it is running backwards. Simply look. The flywheel should be rotating clockwise when viewed from above. If it is rotating counter-clockwise, that's backwards.

Anti-reverse spring is located under the flywheel, under points' breaker plate. It is a silver spring which must be lubricated very lightly with a bit of EP grease. If allowed to run dry, it wears out and no longer does its job.

Picture IS NOT a 60 hp, but does show the anti-reverse spring, #66

I believe all the motors 1968 to 1972 in the 55 to 125 HP used the anti reversing spring.

Well, it spins clockwise. And the voltage going to the blue and green wires check out when switching the shift switch in the control box so the issue must be in the lower unit.
