hello, ive searched and cant find any usefull threads. ive got a old Evinrude 1968 6hp outboard that has always run fine but after no use for a year i started it and no cooling water. i ordered a new impeller and in fitting that realised there was no key way on shaft so replaced that aswell. also rodded out all pipes i could see. after a bit of blowing down tell tale everything seemed clear n it was producing water in tank. fitted to the boat and now no longer producing water, but does produce exhaust smoke out of tell tale. any ideas? i know its old but i cant afford a new one so attempting to fix this is my only option. thank you in advance

Are you sure the key stayed in the impeller and drive shaft when you put the pump back together ??

When you installed the impeller, did you put the impeller on the drive shaft first and then push the impeller housing down on it while rotating the drive shaft or did you have the impeller in the housing ??

I don't get it. It was producing water in the tank but not on the boat? Is the water pump submerged under water when the motor is on the boat? Transom too high? If that is the case, you may want to pull it apart again and see if any damage to the impeller.

i installed the impeller in the housing and as i was entering the shaft into the housing where the keyway was i pulled gently/slowly on starter cord to turn the shaft until keyway alligned and the whole gearhead then slipped up the shaft then reconnected gear linkage and put the 4 bolts in. its same boat as it has been used on before, previous to that it was on a slightly higher transomed boat. i dismantled it again yestday and only thing i could see wrong was that one impeller blade was flopped the wrong way (opposite to the rotation) would this affect it?? thanks for replys

It's possible............Is the drive shaft out of the power head ?? You may be putting it together wrong.

Re: '68 6hp no water probs

well i checked the drive shaft by quickly knocking it into gear and it spins the prop. and i shone a torch up the leg whilst connecting the gear linkage to check on the water pipe. after a lot of searching i couldnt find an impeller key available here in the UK so i had fabricated one, wich after inspecting now id run the motor briefly looks worn. so i believe it was too softer metal and possibly slightly wrong size so ive splashed out and ordered a key and impeller from US. going to take a while for this to get to me but im praying this will solve my issue. thanks again for the helpfull suggestions.
