There is a small plate on the side of the midsection, about half way down. Remove it and you will find another plate behind it. Remove that one also. Inside, you will see a shift rod connector with two screws in it. One of the screws may have fallen out.
When installing the screws, you must use a flashlight and peer in there to make sure the screw hole in the connector is perfectly aligned with the notch in the shift rod before inserting the screw. Failure to do that will wipe the threads off the screw every time. Then it falls out, usually five miles from the dock.
Unfortunatly, if that is the problem, they may have also stripped the threads in the connector and just a new screw won't be enough.
If that is not the problem, watch the connector as you move the shift handle. It should move up and down with no slop or lost motion. If it doesn't, then you have trouble up above, probably inside the midsection, a major job.
