'66 Johnson 80hp ,no Spark

I have a 1966 Johnson 80hp Electramatic.(V4AL-18C) There is no spark at the plugs. I have 12v at the coil when ignition is on.Safety Switch is OK.I DO NOT have the Remote Control hooked up and ,of coarse, the Shifter Toggle Swith is not hooked up.Does the Shifter Switch have to be Connectd? If not,can you suggest other remedies?<br />Thanks much, Mandolinbob.

Bob.... Remove the wire from the coil so that it can be unscrewed from the distributor, then plug it back into the coil. Crank the engine over and recheck the spark directly from that coil wire to any ground point on the block/powerhead.<br /><br />If you now have spark, replace the rotor.
