My kids recently came up with a 65 Johnson Seahorse 33 model rxe-13b and I have been trying to help them get it runing. I got all of the starter wiring sorted out, only to discover we had no spark... Off came the flywheel to discover points covered in green goo. Once I got all of that cleaned up and re-assembled everything, it ran for about 15 seconds til I sheared the flywheel key. I obviously didn't have it torqued enough, does anyone have the correct torque for this engine?

The other problem I have is I can't seem to find the correct key for the crank/flywheel. The local auto parts place has a pack of like 5 different keys, and one of them looks like it should work, but it just won't quite fit right. Where can I find the correct key...

Thanks,

robert.

105 ft/lbs. Any less and the flywheel key will shear. The key is a dealer item - a little different from a standard woodruff key. Dealer sells them for about three bones. Part number is 120395.
If the flywheel hub or the crankshaft ended up marred, you'll want to do this:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=029310;p=1#000022

105ft/lbs is a heck of a lot of torque. You'll need to hold the flywheel with a automotive flywheel turning/holding tool, a length of bar attached to the flywheel by two longer 1/4" bolts along the ring gear, or I've used a chunk of plastic to jam up the electric starter. That's a good way to mess up the starter so beware.

I've got a RXEL-13B in peices that I'm slowly working on. They're tough & reliable engines. Click my man-next-to-house icon. That's my RX-10 (28hp), which is only a little different.

Hope that helps, and welcome to iboats!

(Also, points need to be adjusted to open .020" max.)

No offensive criticism intended here. That 33hp model incorporates the 311356 crankshaft which uses a smaller flywheel key..... 307480.

Install the key so that the outer flat side is straight vertical with the engine, NOT aligned with the crankshaft taper.

No offence taken! Thank you for looking over my shoulder. I honestly appreciate it.

I must be loosing it, that part number I gave is the key from a Sportwin parts list!
