The " plug in " was useful in the day since motors were often taken off the boat.------Modern motors are simply wired without that feature !------Just put all the wires through that hole and put them on the motor directly or a terminal board.-------Powerhead needs to come off to remove the bottom cowling.

?----Would the ozone not disappear via the carburetors ?

I am not certain that there would not be residual, the way the wires rot and considering there is no uv exposure it seems there is more too than just air and hydrocarbon exposure that rots insulation like that.

The 1/2 life of ozone is said to be about 20 minutes.-----This has to do with the quality of insulation on the wiring marketed in those years.

I have some old 120v tools that use that rubber coated wire including an industrial floor sander (the one used for hardwood floors) that I discovered had rotten wiring; wondered why it wouldn't work!
My theory is the way the motor was stored causes the disintegration, I have seen motors wrapped up with garbage bags or shrink wrapped trapping moisture and fumes.
If you examine a harness that still has the electrical tape on it the wiring is good - I use Mercury's Corrosion Gard on the wiring and metal parts.
This wiring diagram should help, the magneto wire grounds the magneto to stop - don't put 12v into it.

So is it tiller operated or remote with a throttle / shift / key switch / choke switch control box ?------your search is going to start for a control box and cables I believe.-----Your first boat motor ??.

It's controlled remotely but I don't have any of that. It's not my first outboard but it is the only one I've ever owned that was this old. If I can get it running I'll track down a set of controls for it then. I don't want to sink a bunch of money into it until I know it's going to run. I can manipulate the shifter and throttle from the engine itself for the time being.

So I bought a 65hp Merc 650 3cyl for $50. The engine is complete but I have no wiring or controls to go with it.

No need for a crystal ball when the OP mentioned no wiring or controls in his first post...

New reading googles may be in order though

Don't shift into R unless the motor is running and I would change the waterpump impeller first of all.
The control box looks like this (decals may be different colors)

The compression checked out good. 120# on 1,2 and 4. Number 3 checked in between 115 and 120.

If you do get it running, and need controls for it, I might have what you need. I have a old 50 hp that I think still has the control, but it would probably need new cables as it has been setting for some time. PM me if I can be of any help.

I appreciate that and I may just take you up on it.

I'm pretty sure the starter I have is not the one that belongs in my engine. Can someone give me a pic of the correct starter or maybe a serial number? I posted a pic earlier in the thread where you can see what I have. It just doesn't look right to me after looking at several others posted online.

Right the starter is too short it should sit on the lower bracket; get your ser. nr. and look on Merc parts sites and search ebay.
