Hi one and all. Thanks for the forum! I've used it already to research my new to me 1964 Evinrude 40hp big twin (40452S) that I inherited from my grandpa. I have had this motor running on the water and it performed well for about 2 minutes then sputtered and stalled.
Upon opening the cover, I noticed the low speed knob was almost rotated out from vibration. I tightened it up and tried to adjust it best I could according to the owners manual. Everything was fine and the engine was plenty powerful but again for only about a minute then bogs down and ka-put.
I am going to go through the litany of things I know you will all recommend - pulling flywheel and checking coils and point, changing plugs, checking gaps, fuel tank vent and the like so I am not asking the brain trust here for anything other than tips and tricks. I have never owned an outboard before but I am a bit handy with my hands and know my way around a motor for the most part.
I read one piece of advice before which said be sure to check/change the LU lube. Is this draining and refilling the lower unit with 90wt gear oil? Are there any other pieces of wisdom regarding this motor to help me along my way and perhaps keep me from learning things the hard way?
All advice appreciated!
