I know the stringers are rotten on this 46 year old boat, but also the transom. My debate is to repair it and have fun with it, or scrap the project. Think I'll go with the first choice. My question is ... should I replace the stringers before I remove the cap? I have heard of hulls shifting while the cap is off. Don't know how true this is, but I'm sure someone on this great forum does. Also .. the boat is still on it's trailer at this time. Should I leave it on the trailer or what? What's the best way to go with this project? Thanks in advance.

Hello Cajun..

I dont think the Hull is going to shift as long as its supported :) .

The only thing I can think of is the Hull/Deck joint possibly "relaxing" ( though another kinda hard to think this will happen ).

If your worried about it..then when you remove the cap .. put some 1x1's across in a few spots to keep that joint where it needs to be so when you install your deck it matches up. ( I still dont think there would be a prob if you dont do this ).

If you can..yes R&R the Stringers with the deck on if possible.

Pics ?

If you can ...just cut the stringers back a bit to R&R the trans .. then do the stringer Remove and Replace ( R&R ).

Why uncap ?

Re: 63 Hiwatha

Thank You Yacht Dr, As you can see, the cap wraps around the top of the transom. So I'm thinking cap removal is necessary to replace the transom. Also, only one stringer only attaches to the transom

You can still "tuck" your trans without uncapping...

Your cap is not/or does not need to be a part of the transom.

You dont have to have a perfect fit all the way up to your deck m8.. cut your trans and replace with more glass.. you do not need to remove the deck...

Welcome to iBoats!
I agree with YD, You do NOT need to De-Capitate her. Your boat is very similar to mine and even thought my transom did not need to be replaced, if it did I would NOT have removed the cap. Did your original deck have a bilge area? I noticed you have 2 drain tubes. Did the center stringer divide the Bilge into two sections? If so, You migh want to redesign this and create a single bilge area by building a rectanular bilge similar to design below.

Yacht Dr & Woodonglass ... When I read your replie, my rear end puckered real tight. But after looking things over and in about 2 hours with a slow sawzall, I had this ...

Now time to sit and relax. Thanks to both of you ...

OMG:eek::eek::eek::eek:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You do not cut out the entire back of your boat!!!! Now you have some major Fiberglass fabrication to do or you will have to entirely scrap the boat. Take a look at the thread below to see what you should have done.
You grind, pry, scrape, dig, scratch and claw the wood off of the outer fiberglass skin but you NEVER, NEVER, NEVER cut the back of the boat off.

I'm not sure you can recover from you have done to your boat
SAVE the piece you cut off. Remove the wood from the Glass and then Send me a Private Message and we can go over what you will have to do to try and restore your boat.

We all learn by "our" mistakes, wether help be far or near. True ... I should have seeked more information. Said boat was given to me, so the "bank" was not there. Fortunately we think this can be salvaged and repaired with additional expense and labor. "Live & Learn"

Hello Cajun..

I would suggest 2 things m8..

1. Save $ and forget about this resto.. ( Unless its of some Value of a personal nature ). This is not really how you start to learn FG repair :) .

2. Fix up the trailer a bit and sell it for Cash that you could use for a better resto boat.

Your looking at an Investment..right now you have 2 sawzall blades..and some beer.. You will never get your $ out of this if you decide to resto .. ever..

Its not actually a bad thing that you Cut the trans off..Its almost a blessing in disguise.

The trans has been replaced before.. there was no glass on the inside ( aside from the tabbings ) ..

You can Find a boat thats in WAY better condition and has more updated features for about what you would put into this thing in blood/sweat/materials and above all Safety.

Remember .. its all about Investment..

I agree completely^^^^. I would not sink any further time and money into the restoration of this particular, dime-a-dozen fiberglass runabout.

I agree as well. Not worth the time or money to restore that boat. I would look for an old starcraft :):):)

Re: 63 Hiwatha

Never go into a gut & rebuild restoration project simply because you want a boat and don't have the money to buy one that is ready to go. Go into it ONLY if you LOVE the boat. If you don't love it, you'll never finish it.
