Re: 63' Evinrude Lightwin Help (rebuilt, now troubleshooting)

The O'Reilley auto parts store down the street from my house is getting a roll of hypalon wire in at 10am this morning. I'm going to go by there in a few hours and pick some up. Should I buy a lot? It was kinda hard to find local. I'm going to try and tackle the fuel filter here in just a minute so I'll let you guys know what happens.

5 feet should be more than enough for that motor. Buy more if you plan on working on other motors. I buy it in bulk, as I work on lots of motors.

Got the plug wire, cleaned the filter. tried to fire it up but nothing....Its frustrating enough that the motor wont work but the recoil spring is a totally different headache. I hate to give up but its becoming more frustrating than relaxing....I might keep my eye out for another motor. I know a guy has a 3 horse sea bee in the area but from what I understand, those parts are hard to come by as they dont share too much with other omc stuff. Maybe I'll give it another shot when I cool off

when it gets frustrating, walk away from it. time to re-hash all thats been done, and checked. compression is good? points are clean and gapped to 020? strong snappy spark? fuel getting to carb? fuel getting from carb to engine?

Re: 63' Evinrude Lightwin Help (rebuilt, now troubleshooting)

Thanks for the advice nwcove. I let it sit in the shed for a few days and decided to tear it down and put it back together and document the whole process in photo. After taking about 3 pictures, I had taken the float bowl off and it was filled with gas. everything looked clean, I checked my points, cleaned with contact cleaner, fiddled with the speed control position and low speed needle, took it off choke, wrapped the cord around the flywheel and low and behold.....

It ran for a few minutes and died out. I noticed that the low speed needle was rattling and turning on it own. Any thoughts on stopping this? Did I miss something in the rebuild kit? I have two black "o" rings that I never used...maybe they go in the high/low needles? I have a fixed high speed jet that I took out and cleaned well. I got it to start a couple more times but it kept dying on me. Hey, its progress....better than the trash pile I think. I also have a guy that will sell me an early 50's (by the looks of it) johnson 5hp. He said he'd go 50 bucks on it and he used it up until a year or so ago and its been sitting in his shop ever since. Worth picking up?

Did you install packing on the needle - 2 or 3 of the reddish fiber washers. Is the packing nut tight? Much easier to get parts for the 3hp than that old 5hp. especially carb parts.

Yes, I put at least two of those packings in. I have no nut that went in after the packing. I might have an extra packing or two and I believe I have the old ones that came out. Should I add them? There isnt a nut on the exploded view either. I see one on the fisherman series but the lightwin/ducktwin shows no nut. I was going to seafoam it once it was running steady but I gave up wrapping and pulling, wrapping and pulling......I'll get the recoil start fixed tomorrow and get back to work on the motor. Should be worlds easier to get started with that

low speed needle gettin loose? tighten the packing nut up. the kits usually have more fiber washers than needed for packing, and i use 3 on both needles, but they will get loose after a short run, and after a long run. keep snugging down the packing nuts after a rebuild until they stay good. yer on the right track!

I checked the 63' parts catalog and the carb there looks almost like mine. It has the nut as number 14 on the list on page 6 (part # 300179). I found it at a few places for sale for about 7 bucks. I dont believe my carb has the screw that screws vertically right through the bottom of the float bowl http://www.marineengine.com/parts/vintage-evinrude-johnson/278442/catalog.html?http://www.marineengine.com/parts/vintage-evinrude-johnson/278442/27844200001.htm
I'm also not sure about the orifice plug that is number 17 on the same list on page 6 of that link. I dont recall one...

So, I ordered a whole new fixed jet assembly as well as a new packing nut for my low speed needle. This should be the final parts order for this project. I'm hoping the parts come in this week and I can wrap this thing up and get it on the lake.

Good! Without the packing nut, gas can leak out and air can get in. And the needle will never stay adjusted. Motor will never run right.

What is the correct way to install the packing nut? should I put the needle in first then tighten the nut around it or tighten the nut then the needle? Also, any recommendations on a screwdriver to install the jet that goes in before the plug on the fixed jet? I have one but I'm afraid of breaking the jet because it is just too small but my others are just too big....I checked the fuel petcock on the filter side and it was jammed with sediment...I guess loose varnish and corrosion? I felt like it was really clean but I guess it needs another round. I figure I'll clean the carb again for good measure since I hate and distrust that filter so...How much thicker is the lubriplate 105 than the 80/90 marine oil? Is it more of a grease? Oh, on a side note: I picked up a 1958 scott atwater 3.6 and a johnson seahorse 4 from the 70's or 80's that looks like it just came out of the box. Guy said the johnson overheated but I dont know if its a water issue or a bad mix of gas issue. The atwater was running until it was stored without a plug....I pulled the cover off, the head gasket didnt look ruined but the piston walls had some rust/carbony mess. Didnt look destroyed but it seems locked up for now. No money in these. If I get them to run, I win if not, I have a lot of good parts for someone...

needle first then tighten nut...jet removal tool 317002 < look around on the forums as the dimensions are given if you want to grind one yourself >...you may have to clean that jet in place anyway , just be patient and don't distort the i.d...105 is more of a grease than 80/90 w.

Re: 63' Evinrude Lightwin Help (rebuilt, now troubleshooting)

I pulled the muscles in my arm, neck and sides trying to start this monster the other day...to no avail. I pulled the fuel petcock and it was crammed up with sediment so I guess I didnt clean the tank as well as I thought..I think I'm going to strain the gas out and tear the thing down again. I imagine that stuff got sucked around the carb and fuel line so it probably wont do much until I get it out. I'm deff. adding an inline filter though, I've had my fill of this one that is on it. I'm just going to find a nice chainsaw filter and cut the copper tube and put the filter in the middle with rubber hose. Before, when I was trying to start it, it would never do anything with the choke on but would start when it was off. Now, it will momentarily come to life with the choke on and that was the best results I got trying to crank it the last time. Maybe its the missing packing nut? Also, I screwed in the fixed jet as far as it would go and put the plug back in, I'm guessing I should take it back out and clean it good since all this sediment stuff could be anywhere. It's been quite a frustrating journey but there is light at the end of the tunnel and I'm staying positive. I'm holding off on any manual starting for a few days but if the weather is clear, I'll try and get the thing torn down.

Re: 63' Evinrude Lightwin Help (rebuilt, now troubleshooting)

So an update on the lightwin: I've done everything I can do to get this thing running again to no avail...Two of the bolt holes for the head gasket are stripped and I'm 99% sure that water is passing the gasket and entering one or both cylinders and fouling the plugs. If I clean them and clean the cylinder and try starting it it will run for just a second and quickly die and wont start again until I pull the plugs and repeat. My fathers' friend is a marine mechanic and I'm taking it to him next week or tomorrow if I can, to get the holes filled and tapped. If he cant do it, I live a few miles from tons of machine shops as Lowes Motor Speedway is about 5 minutes from my house and there are about a million high performance techs in the area. I think this is the only thing keeping this little monster from living, I hope so anyway.....
