63/64 mercury 500 question

Can anyone help me figure out how to open or take off the top of my motor where pull start is.i was told that it should open up like a car hood but i dont see any latches or hooks.sn is 1600848. any help will be a great help

look for a nut at each corner of top hood . you may have to stand on your head to see them.

Don't know if yours is the same as my '77 500, but on mine you remove the front plate by twisting the knob, remove the 2 straps that hold the outside cover on, and then there is a latch near the top of where your chrome front plate is. The latch is right where the upper piece of your chrome piece fits in under the top engine cover. It would be right under the giant "5" on your cover. Again, mine is a '77, yours may be different.

Yes you wil find a 7/16 self locking nut at these locations on each side(marked red). Dont forget the coke connection may have to be disconnected under the cover.The nut on the cover near the starter cant be reached with a socket so a 7/16 open end wrench will be needed. On the rear there may be some metal spacers that may drop off when you raise the cover up.
