I just bought a 5.5 hp Evinrude from 1963 and it had spark in only one cyl., so i changed points and condensers in it. Once i got sark i was hoping it would run, but now it only runs for about 15 seconds and then it stalls itself out. If I take the plugs out they are soaked. I understand that Im getting too muc gas, but i cant figure out where the problem is. The carbeurator lloks OK and the needle valves are both at 1.5 turns. I dont know where to go on this one......Any ideas woud be great

Squeeze the primer bulb, and observe the carb.Look for gas running out of the carb.

Carbon can plug the exaust port, and it'll do this also (wet plugs, hot fire,no go).
If the engine cannot breathe, the engine will start briefly, then stall, because it cannot expell the last cycle.
I have to do this to my baby merc and my weedeaters yearly. It plugs the mufflers on the weedeaters, and that is all she wrote.
On a weedeater, you only have to pull the muffler to test this theory, but on most OBs, it aint that simple. But trust me on this one.

I'm getting lotsa blue smoke when i do get the thing to run. So I dont think that can be it, but maybe I'm wrong. Let me know if I am.

How about the float needle or float level?
Is the main jet too big due to cleaning with a too hard object?
/Bear

Before we get too crazy here - answer me these...

Compression readings for both cylinders?

Good spark in both cylinders?

Carburetor has been COMPLETELY disassembled, cleaned and reassembled with a new carb kit?

Float level has been set as per the book (flat and level with carb body when carb is inverted.)?

Fuel pump is pumping fuel? (Test by removing fuel line at the carb and routing it into a coffee can. Pull motor over and note whether it's pumping fuel into the can.)

Using proper spark plugs (Champion J4C for general use, possibly J6C if using primarily for trolling)?

Fuel + spark + compression = running motor, so let's eliminate the obvious before moving to anything to obscure just yet...

- Scott
