60hp switch box question

ok here is how it all started jus bought the boat and was puttin trollin motor on it wasnt thinkin about it but previous owner had wirin harnes grounded to the boat i messed up and let the hot wire ground to the boat and it smoked about 5 wires in the harnes but didnt blow the main engine fuse........ here is the good part motor still ran fine even after the smoke'n..... took it out right after all this ran it for about a hour cut it off and on several times ran fine then last time i cut it off it wouldn't start back and doest have fire to the plug...... got a new harnes yesterday off another motor jus to check and make sure it wasn't mine after i rewired mine......... the question i have is the three green wires off the switch bow will ohm to ground.... i have completly unpluged the box from the motor and these wires will still ohm out.... is this wrong?? or is the box shot???? i dont mind spendin the money on a box but the merc guy in town is jus a big rip off and i dont mind workin on my own stuff

well the guy i bought it off of said it was a 88 i got the serial number and stuff but the part number off the box is 19052a1 witch that part number matches 91-97 from wat i have seen

well you need to use the serial number to find out what year model it is for sure, as for the number on the box that doesnt matter could be an updated part thats fits a few diff year models, diff years are goin to have diff wiring depending on the year diff

I hate to get involved with someone elses thread but, the begining serial number in 1992 was OB 082000 so it's a 1991 engine, the only way to test a switch box is with a DVA and read the input and output voltages. Both the stator and trigger may be tested with a OHM meter although it not as accurate as the DVA testing. If you want that test we can give it to you.

ok i got a good multimeter...... so if i check thr trigger and the stator and they check out it has to be the switch box??

the only thing i am really wonderin is i can take the box completely alose from the motor and the main ground and the power to the coil will ohm out..... im prolly wrong but i didnt think it should do that......


some tests would be helpful if you dont mind

If you have a bad coil it will only effect 1 cyl and there is no way to ohm a switch box and to test it without the coil hooked up to act as a load would not prove any thing. Here's the test.

ok lets try something different...... tried a stator check preaty sure i did it right will not omh anything between the red and blue wires at rest or starting either one.......... so that mean its bad??
