I just recently bought a 80s model 60 hp johnson and it grinds when going into reverse. I have read the other threads about this problem but the only thing i see different is that when i put the motor into forward it takes a long push before i begin to go. So i was wondering if both cables for forward and reverse need to be adjusted or are the dog ears bad. Also, if it is just adjusting the cables could someone help me out in doing that. Thanks. Im trying to do this myself so i don't have to pay the marina. Poor college kid.

disconnect the shift cable at the motor, and shift it manually. sounds like something is out of the holder, or a bad cable. Welcome to iboats. we're all poor we own a boat.

Welcome to Iboats!!! I am new to this site myself and must say U have come to the right place!!! I myself have ideas on what is going on w ur lower unit but don't feel comfortable adressing ur issues. The more u look around and familierize urself w the forum pages u will find that when u post a new thread go back to that catagory johns/rude and U'll see ur tread has been posted. Now click on ur post and scroll down u will see previous posts made with related problems... It can help u tremendously or maybe U'll learn something new about ur motor/boat, etc. At anyrate there is alot of very helpful and respectful most of all extremely knowledgable people here that we all benifit from!!!

This motor has been sitting for some years now, would it be a good idea for me to change the gear lube? Could this be part of the problem of not going into reverse? If so how do i change the oil?

It's a good idea to change it and I asked the same question about proper procedure not long ago... this was the response from Joe Reeves:

"The lower unit take a couple quarts (roughly). Remove the large slotted drain screw at the bottom of the lower unit. Also remove the identical looking oil level screw that you'll see higher up the unit. Let the oil drain out."

"Fill from the bottom until it flows out the top oil level hole. Insert the top screw to create a air pocket. Then, having the bottom screw ready, remove the oil filler, tube, whatever you're using, and insert the bottom screw as quickly as possible."

I did as instructed and it was easy!!! As far as the grinding into reverse and the long push going forward... If u did what tashasdaddy had previously instucted I'm sure that problem was remidied!!! Sounded like cables out of adjustment... GOOD LUCK!!!

bogggar1, you did good to a point, when ever you remove the lower plugs replace the washers, there only 50 cents, but several pair, and remember where you put them.. they are the # 1 reason for water intrusion into the lower unit.

siu, did you try shifting manually. also read this: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086
