A new to me boat just aquired has a throttle/shifter controller that has a flat lever you lift (to choke or fuel dump?) when starting then you put it back down. To shift, you lift a button on the bottom of the handle then push or pull for forward or reverse and throttle. The guy who showed me the boat was not sure about operation of the controller, but it appears that you can't rev the motor unless it is in gear.

My question are: 1. Is there a way to disengage the shifting to allow for throttle movement only? and, 2. Is the normal procedure for starting the engine to use the choke lever only with no throttle action? 3. What is the best way to prevent flooding the carburators?

I'll try to post a picture tomorrow.

1. That is the purpose of the flat lift lever. Raising it up gives it some throttle without putting it in gear.

2. Cold start procedure is raise the lever, then push and hold the key in while turning it to crank. Pushing in on the key chokes it, turning the key it cranks it. You have to do both at once for a cold startup. It actually is a primer rather than a choke, but that's a mere technicality.

3. If you do the above, it is unlikely that you will flood it. When it gets enough gas sucked in, it should start. As soon as it fires or starts, let go of the choke. If perchance you do flood it simply crank it with the key, without using the choke.
