CANUFIXIT------YOU are wrong.----This motor has a seperate belt driven magneto !!---There is no trigger and there is no switch box on it !------If you are not sure of the motor talked about then look it all up in a parts book.

Posts do not say what years this is referring. MY 60 is a 1997. Please be sure we are all on the same page/engine before flaming. I'm always willing to learn something new.....

Some of us instantly know what a 60 model 400 is and it is a 4 cylinder 1960 model.----It is painted " cloud white " and not black.-----I have a few of those white Mercury motors too.

I commend any one who wants to keep and use these older white Mercury outboards.-----Absolutely fine motors without all the modern " plastic / electronic junk " on them.-----If you learn the basics you will never be faced with the need to visit a $ 100 / hr shop.

If you're going to work on the magneto follow this diagram; the magneto is held on by 4 cap screws and can be replaced without removing the adapter. kiekhaefer-magnetosmall.jpg

Just a note - if you're going to run one of the old magneto driven 4-cylinder Mercs, get yourself a spare magneto - they're all more or less interchangeable from 1955 on up. Go through it, new bearings, cleaned and gapped points, cleaned up cap and rotor, basically ready to go. Zip it up in a plastic bag, wrap it in a soft towel and store it in your boat's tool box, or some other safe spot onboard, and carry the tools to swap it out. It can save your weekend!
