Need Help ASAP
I have a 60 hp mercury big foot 2 stroke Serial Number 0g581854 that will not crank fully...I can turn the fly wheel by hand and it will turn almost a full turn and stop in either the neutral, drive or reverse position then I will have to turn the fly wheel in the opposite direction to get it to turn again and it will stop and wont turn any further, when I turn the fly wheel the prop is turning also....I took all 3 spark plugs out and all tree pistons are moving with what little compression you would expect turning the motor by hand.....Also if I turn motor over with the key it does the same thing..It will turn to a certain point and stop....if it is in reverse when turning the flywheel then I have to shift to forward to get the flywheel to turn in the other direction by hand almost a full turn then locks up....If the motor is in neutral I can turn the fly wheel to the right almost a full turn until it stops or locks up then I can turn flywheel in opposite direction until it stops or locks up without shifting
I hope I explained the problem ok.....
Thanks
Im new here so bear with me....

It could be several things. I would drop the LU oil first if its nasty then drop the LU and see if the motor is still locked up, That will tell you whats going on. You will have two results with the LU off, the motor will turn, then you know its the LU, or if the wont then its in the motor.

How did this happen ?? Was it while running at full throttle ?----While running at idle ?---Any chance that little mices crawled in there and built a home while motor was in a barn ?

Your s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - ( 60 H.P. (1997 ))
Serial No: 0G581854 Model No: 1060452TD

Parts and Service Bulletin list for s/n 0G581854:

Search Results - Crowley Marine

The service manual you require is P/N: 90-852572. If you do not have this manual. see my message to you in Notifications at the top of this page.

Here is how the prop should react in each gear, using finger pressure only to turn the prop:

16. Check shift operation as follows:
a. Place shift lever in forward gear. Gear housing
should ratchet when propeller shaft is
turned clockwise and resistance should be
felt when propeller shaft is turned counterclockwise.
b. Place shift lever in neutral. Propeller shaft
should rotate freely in either direction.
c. While rotating propeller shaft, place shift
lever in reverse gear. Resistance should be
felt when propeller shaft is rotated in either
direction.

Try each gear and see how the prop reacts. Anything other than this would be a good reason to drop the LU and then check the flywheel to see if it turns freely without coming to a stop. Let us know what you find.

A) It does exactly like you posted and flywheel does turn, it even sounds like there is compression .I did not take the lower unit off yet...I took the 4 bolts out but I am have trouble removing the lower unit...its on there pretty tight

Doug;

If you look at Section 6C, page 8, figure 53992 of the service manual you will see that with the four bolts on either side, you have to look underneath the anti ventilation plate and remove the trim tab as well.

When you did the prop test, using finger pressure only to turn the prop, are you saying that the flywheel was turning?

Re: 60 hp big foot 2 stroke will not crank all the way

I dont have a manual for this motor
I cant turn the prop with just finger pressure, there is to much resistance in the forward and reverse position
I can turn the prop with one hand and the flywheel turns almost 1 turn and stops/locks up

I got the lower unit off, it was easy after I found a fifth nut to remove....Anyway took the lower unit of and everything is the same, still locks up after turning the flywheel about a 3/4 to a full turn

Re: 60 hp big foot 2 stroke will not crank all the way

These models are bad about sleeve slipping and causing interference with crank counterweight, if it slips back to far the ring will fall behind sleeve and lock it up good. I pin all my customers sleeves on these models...

I will have to take off the whole carb assembly also to be able to see anything right...the exhaust cover just covers the carburetors I believe...I will try it....and let you know...thanks
