I have a 6hp evinrude that will cut on me. it takes a copy pulls and somtimes you need to choke it to restart it. I was thinking of rebuilding fuel pump and replacing fuel tank and hose they look swelled up. also what do you think about the igntion coils? should i also replace them. where can I buy a factury repair manual? how can i tell what year it is buy the serial number-6604A Model number J0009603<br />Thanks for any info or help, Paul

Howdy, Paul.<br /><br />Welcome to iboats. <br /><br />6604 is the model number, that is a 1976 engine.<br /><br />Get an OEM Service Manual from kencook.com. <br /><br />Use the manual to troubleshoot.<br /><br />Good luck.

The fact that it needs the choke to restart it points to the carb as the cause of the problem, or at least the fuel system somewhere. Make sure the tank is clean (and the filter) make sure the primer bulb is ok and check for air leaks in the fuel line, the connector, internal fuel connections and the filter. Does pumping the bulb help to keep it running?<br /><br />If no problems with all these strip and clean the carb. Clean though jets etc with a (soft) wire. Running carb cleaner through it probably wont do any good.<br /><br />Nearly forgot check the vent on the fuel tank!<br /><br />The diagram here may be useful BRP parts

Thanks JB and Vic for your replies. I have some more questions and history on my motor the previous owner use this motor in salt water last season and never flush it. But previous years it was use in fresh water lakes. I just receive my repair manual this week. Remove carb and fuel pump from engine and des assemble them. The carb was very clean but found float to be too heavy and made out of cork. Also found the float bowl housing by the fuel inlet had a bur. When I disassemble the fuel pump found some rust on the filter screen and the diaphragm was starting to crack. I replace the float, gaskets and surface the float bowl. Installed new fuel pump. Before I installed the carb should I remove and replace the leaf valves? I look at them through the intake port they look clean. Should I replace the cylinder head gasket and exhaust cover gaskets also. Thanks for any info or help Paul.

If that's the tool that fits on the crankshaft and points to the marks on the breaker plate, you can just use your flywheel as a subsitute. It's got two marks 180 degrees apart - one for each cylinder.<br /><br />However, you can simply set the points to open 0.020" maximum. It's very close to where the points should open and many very reliable OMC technicians take this short cut.<br /><br />Problems with the leaf valves on OMC outboards is exceedingly rare. If you can see them with the aid of a flash light, make sure they're not being held widely open. This sometimes happens when a foriegn object gets lodged in one. Other than that, it's safe to assume they're fine.

Thanks for the help. Finally got a chance to start the motor today. It runs great better than before. Have one question about the water pump? There is no water coming out the exhaust bypass hole and there is air bubbles coming from a screen on the port side of the gear case. I assuming the water pump is bad. Went to ishopmarine to order one. But there are 3 kits, chrome kit, water pump repair kit, and impeller kit. All three are for 5inch longer parts. Would any one of these fit my short shaft engine?
