Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone could help me out, my alternator pulley locked up and destroyed the serpentine belt. I replaced the alternator and as I was installing the new belt I noticed the idler pulley had a piece of the bolt missing. (See pic)

Engine: 6.2L Mercruiser MPI

Now I don't want to break anything, or force anything so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to remove the pulley so I can replace the screw and the pulley all together.

Also as you can see on the pic there is some rust in that area, any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks in advance

PS. I found an old thread with the part numbers, but can't seem to figure out how to remove the pulley.

Remove the pulley bracket, support the bracket with a large socket over the stud and apply a BFH to the stud. Put the nut back on loosely so the stud isn't belled and will slide through the bearing and bushing behind the pulley.

You better find the source of the water on the belts and pulleys. And clean up the pulleys, that's a lot of rust and a new belt may not last. Does the water pump pulley wiggle? You may need to start her up and watch for drips or a river.

your missing a nut and washer..... it spins onto the threaded portion of the stud holding the idler

however as GA noted, you have a water leak issue. that is what murdered your alternator.

most likely your circulating pump is leaking. look at the weep hole to verify.

To remove the idler pulley, you should be able to just pull it off the stud. But give the amount of rust on everything else, I suspect it'll be rusted on... And may require a little more 'omph'...

I also suspect the water leak is from here...

After seeing the stud BT posted, I see what happened. Someone used the hex end to remove the stud. It didn't work!

Quite right, it's been sheared off.... That is a 5/16" hex, used to tension the belt by running the stud up or down on a toothed 'rack', and then to hold the stud in place while the (missing) nut is tightened up .
