Re: 5hp Buccaneer Carb Problems

Are the water jackets just the outside of the powerhead? If so, that gets so hot that it steams. I am running it in a tank right now, but I plan to try it on a boat this afternoon to make sure it's not just the tank.

ouch, steam is NOT good. the water jackets are on either side of the cylinders...steam means it is overheating. sounds like it's running almost up to seizing temp then quitting. check the water intake, replace the impeller, and blow some air through the water/coolong system to make sure its open. old impellers can come apart and the pieces can cause blockages. if it sat for a long time the impeller is brittle at best and completely shot at worst. mud daubers like to build nests in the holes/passages of outboards so check all openings/passages carefully...a long stiff wire usually does the trick.

alright, I got the impeller out. The impeller is very flexible, and only shows wear on the outside of the blades. It still fits nice and snug inside of the housing. I am attaching a picture of the impeller inside of the upper housing. Could you please tell me if it is installed correctly or if it is upside down. Thanks...

looks right. do the impeller vanes straighten out when it is out of the cup? if they stay cupped, the impeller needs to be changed. most E-J dealers will have it and doesn't cost much. if it gets steaming hot on a boat, definitely change/replace it.

Re: 5hp Buccaneer Carb Problems

I finally have some good news to report. I went ahead and got a complete impeller kit from my local johnnyrude dealer. The kit was a retrofit which came with a new style housing and impeller. I got it installed and ran it in the tank. I ran it at 3/4 throttle for about 3 minutes, and I could still touch the cooling jackets no problem. There was quite an increase in the water output as well. Now I just have to take it out on the lake for a little test run. I'll report back afterwards!

Re: 5hp Buccaneer Carb Problems

I have yet another question on this outboard. What fuel-oil ratio should I be running in it. The manual says 16:1. I have some 2 cycle oil that says it is advanced enough that you can use a 50:1 ratio no matter what the manufacturer reccomends. I would just like to know what oil ratio I should be running to protect the motor.

only use what gale recommended, 16:1 or 24:1 using modern TCW-3 marine oil. 50:1 is way too thin for your Buc.

I finally got it on the boat today and took it out fishing. It ran great and never had any problems. Thanks to everyone for all of the help!
