59 evinrude 10hp sportwin problems.

My 59 evinrude 10hp sportwin stopped running. Ran good 2 weeks ago then I go to start and will not start. Cleaned carb and installed kit with float. Backed off high and low one turn. Replaced plugs gapped to .30. After a few pulls it started for about 30 seconds then died. Will not start again. I am getting gas in the bowl. Plugs look dry. If I spray premix in the cylinders it starts for a few seconds. Inside the bowl there is a what looks like pouris cylinder that gets tightened down. Should that be snug or am I blocking fuel.

If you can keep the engine running by spraying fuel mixture into the carb, you have a carb problem. If the bowel is full of fuel, you must have a restriction in the low speed circut. When you cleaned the carb did you clean all the passages or just rinse out the bowel?
If you are talking about the pouris cylinder inside the glass bowel, that is your fuel filter and it should be snug.

Yes the glass bowl. I get gas in there. I cleaned the passages with wire and srayed with cleaner and air. Also replaced seals. After I did this it ran for about.30.seconds while adjusting carb. Now will not start at all

If that fuel filter is plugged up, it would cause your problem.

I gotta ask---have the coils been replaced? If they haven't they need to be. The old ones have a 100% failure rate. People often mistake it for a carburetor problem.

I just got the motor. I am not sure on coils. It has good spark and fires up with premix in the cylinders. The spark plugs are dry like they are not.getting fuel.

The way I would approach it, check compression, remove the flywheel and go through the ignition system under the flywheel and make sure the spark will jump a 1/4" air gap. Then go through the carburator.

I checked compression 83 both cyls. Still fired up for a few seconds with pre mix sprayed in the cylinders. The other day it started and ran good. Today i went to fire it up after adding sea foam to the gas and it wont start. Im stumped. I also have this brown milky substance and my lower end/prop and in the water tank. Seems to come out after pulling the rope a lot.

If you did not pop the soft metal plug off of the top of the carb when you built it then you need to.That is where you get your idle gas flow from....VERY small holes=VERY important to see that they are clear.You get a new plug with a kit and simply press it in then a slight tap to expand it to keep it in place.

i did replace that plug. When i installed it i really hit it in thete. Is that bad. It was not starting before i cleaned the carb either.

HI checkpoint. Use this link to help dial in your carb settings. Also, make sure you only ever run the motor in a test tank with water filled up to about and inch or two below the main exhaust port. The good news is that you r compression sounds good, which means everything else can be fixed. The trick is to be methodical and address each issue one at the time, fix it, then move on. You have compression, the next is to check spark (should jump a 1/4" gap), once you've got good spark, all that is left is fuel (i.e. the carb). The seafoam shouldn't have hurt anything. Carbs can be a little tricky until you get the hang of them. Just be patient and she'll be running in no time.

So turns out I had bad gas. The carb bowl was filling with milky gas. I popped the gas cap on the tank looked in with a flashlight and the tank was full of milky gas. Rinsed out tank and put fresh gas. Started second pull. Any reason I had so much water in my tank. It sits outside in my covered boat. Could there be water getting into my crankcase and out the pressure line into the tank?

It's possible, I suppose, but I doubt it. Probably more likely that the ethanol in the gas is attracting and absorbing ambient moisture in the air and trapping it in the gas. Ethanol can "grab" up to 100% of it's volume in water. So if you have a 10 gallon tank that has 1 gallon of ethanol mixed in coming out of the pump, it can attract up to another 1 gallon of water from the air/environment. That's why a lot of folks take care to keep their gas tank sealed up when not in use and/or add fuel stabilizers to the gas to prevent absorption in the first place. You could also covert the motor to a modern, single line, fuel pump set up to eliminate the pressure tank set up all together.

If your pressure tank is working fine i would leave it alone, its much easier in these parts to find non ethanol gas ( they advertise it at some gas stations) its the $4.09 price tag per gallon that's killing us "and" mandated ethanol.

some stations still leaded gas too . Its hard to find ethanol free gas where I live . I need to drive to the next county walworth lake geneva wisconsin . But some stations have lead gas . My motor from the late 1950's ran on leaded gas . The lead is for the clynders and valves to lube them . But im told that unleaded the 10 0/0 mix is bad for the rubber gas lines . the enthanoll eats them up something bad .
