I have a 1959 Super SeaHorse 35 and am inquiring about the proper method for replacing the drive shaft seals without distorting them. My previous attempt with a socket as a mandrel didn't fair so well!
You want to put some penetrating oil on there and heat the thing up a bit.Tap slightly and it will come loose. You can take a piece of wood and drill a hole in it.Lay the thing on top and tap it out through the hole.
Good luck.
It really does not matter if you damage the old seal, you are replacing it anyway,I have been known to flip the seal out with a screw driver, replace it and it works just fine.
Good luck.
Clean the housing extremely well and then put some omc gasket sealant on the housing and the seal. The top of the housing has a slightly conical opening.
Press the seal gently into it and lay a piece of wood big enough so you can hold it,on top of it.Now tap lightly on the wood with a hammer and it should just slide in there.
That bit of gasket sealant will also help sealing your lower unit.
