That is right.one goes to the points and the other to the ground.
The remote kill switch may be hooked to the carburetor solenoid and kill the engine by engaging the choke,or it is hooked to the points. It can also be a shortening out of the points. In that case there should be a black wire coming out from underneath the flywheel that goes into the wiring harness.

that would be two black black wires coming from under the flywheel, one for each set of points/coils. When these are shorted together it will kill the engine. Normally one of these wires is also connected to the vacumme cutout switch.

thanks. My motor has the 2 black wires coming from under flywheel. How are they hooked up on the vaccum cutout switch?? Also when motor runs it has raw fuel/oil coming out exhaust. Both plugs are firing so not sure.Does it mean carb is too rich?? Or float bowl needs adjusting??Again thanks for all the help..

Your outboard ought to have an adjustable high and low speed mixture control. If you're running rich rather than misfiring, you must adjust the controls rather than reset the float.

One black wire (factory is the bottom cylinder, but it doesn't matter) runs to the tip of the vaccum cutout switch, and then on to the kill switch. The other wire just runs straight to the kill switch.

Here's a schematic for the 35hp. This doesn't include the kill switch so you'll have to draw that in yourself:
http://mercury.walagata.com/w/chapsboy/1438818833740.jpg

Hope that helps!

PS - how are you observing the exhaust while the engine's running? It ought to be under-water.

Re: 58 Johnson 35 hp coil question

The info for the kill switch was perfect..thanks.
I adjusted top jet(slow) out 1.5 turns and bottom jet(high speed) out about 3/4 turn and tried to adjust slow speed with motor in water.I cranked it over out of water for a few seconds after observing raw fuel/oil in water floating on top.It idles at a fairly fast idle but tries to backfire out exhaust at slow idle and wants to die.Doesnt want to do full power but if I feather throttle seem to be able to get higher revs out of it.Does this help diagnosing?? I rebuilt carb 2 years ago but was never installed on motor till now.

The initial carb settings are very rich. Once you get them adjusted correctly the unburnt fuel/oil will go away. The backfire has me concerned, but try adjusting the carb first.
