I've decided that I'm going to do a basic rebuild on my 58" Evinrude Big Twin 35 hp.

I have a few issues with it, and instead of trying to chase them all down, I figure I may as well just make it "new".

Can anybody help me out with a parts list for this? I'm afraid I'll leave something out.

Yep, got that bookmarked.

The problem is running through the diagrams and picking out every part that needs to be replaced. Especially on te tiny screen of my netbook.

I'm working on my list as we speak, but I don't want to miss anything.

I'm not asking for specifics, but more an idea of what exactly it is that I need to complete a rebuild successfully.

That totally depends on what can't be re-used. All gaskets, seals and O rings need to be new. The rest depends on condition. You will need a OEM shop manual for cylinder bore tolerances, etc. Did you measure compression? It's a good first clue about pistons and rings. The block may need to be bored. If so, only use a marine machine OB shop, let them tell you the overbore and what pistons to use. Make sure the machine shop knows before they do any machining what make/model pistons will go in.

You may need wrist pins and bearings, conrod big end bearing, main bearings, etc., but these are usually only replaced if there's a need. Of course, if money's no object, you could just replace all bearings.

Yup...It's only money! I've got over 600$ in my '57 Lark rebuild/restoration. Everything in the pic is new old stock (NOS) including the the block, case, and crank. I got the parts on ebay, Sea-Way, & marine engines.

Yea, I get to rebuild a 58 Evinrude 5.5hp I'll likely find a new crank and rod set for it, but I don't think I'll have to go as far as a new block. If you plan on doing a rebuild to your Big Twin, I would suggest these sources for parts.

sea-way.com
engine blade and prop.com
outboard-parts.com
laingsoutboards.com
tcoutboard.com
fairwindsmarina.com
salvagemarine.com
marinepartsoutlet.com
outboardexchange.com
Superior Marine (800-338-9281)
budgetboats.net
americanoutboard.com
piratemarinesalvage.com
trixieslanding.com
mmmarinesalvage.com
tcoutboards.com
http://www.nymarine.ca/piclist.html Paint and decals

These should all cover your needs

I felt exactly the same as you when I began my rebuild, thx997303. I even started a thread very similar to yours. I found that what the others are saying here was exactly correct. Some parts must be replaced without question while others can be reused if they are in good condition. Read through your service manual(s) for each of your motor systems. If you have specific questions about what needs to be replaced in a particular system and it is not clear in your manual(s), then post a specific question here.

What I found to be helpful was to digitize my parts lists. I scanned my parts manual into Adobe Acrobat and then I converted the scanned images to text. Acrobat makes it really easy to do that. I only had Adobe Reader on my computer, so I downloaded the 30 day trial version of Acrobat just for this purpose. Let me know if you want to try this and if you need help with the conversion.

I then imported the text into Excel and I found that to be much easier to work with when searching for parts. By the way, if anybody with a 1963 75hp Starflite wants that Excel file, let me know.
