Freshly rebuilt/short-blocked, and back from the mechanic, my 57' Mark 30E is ready for the finishing - paint and decals from Grubbs...

A couple quick questions:

1. The exposed metal areas around the power head, and 'V"'s, etc, up front: I tested a small section, cutting with sand paper, and polishing out - nice chrome - but...

Should I go ahead and polish these out, then try to mask them, prior to painting?

Or should I paint all, then sand off these areas and polish?

2. I ordered the 'nut cover' for the top from Grubbs - it is unfinished stamped steel. Was the original (which was missing from mine when I got it) painted (in this case Sunset Orange), painted silver, or chrome plated???

Thanks for the help - Joe

Hi Joe,
From the factory, the outer raised face of the lower and upper cowlings, the raised ridge from the face plate to the recoil retainer nut, and the chevrons on the face plate are all sanded AFTER painting. They were sanded - not polished. I finished mine with 320 grit, keeping all sanding horizontal. Lots of folks like to polish them up, but I prefer to keep things as original as possible...
The top nut cover was polished stamped aluminum. Do whatever looks best on yours.

Thanks so much, Scott - I'll be starting the cleaning in the morning, as she's now home from the mechanic's!

I am, however, looking for the correct 'core & cable' for the electric choke mechanism...
