50 HP stalls when reversing

Hello I hope someone can help?
I took my boat out for the first time, every time I try to put in reverse stalls out goes in but stalls immediately. The motor seems to idle fine the control is somewhat a pain to use has the pull out knob. Any suggestions I could try it is a 1985 Merc 50hp 2 stroke thanks

Start by checking idle speed and idle mixture adjustments.
