I can be boating all day & all is fine then without warning the motor rpms drop to about 2800, & it will not go any higher even at full throttle. If I hit the choke the rpms will surge then drop back. The filter & fuel lines are new the plugs are good. The motor is a 2000 but only has about 50 hrs on it. The fuel is fresh & I always use Stabil in my fuel. It may work all day or week without a problem, then without warning it will act up, the next day it may be fine again. Any help would be appreciated.

Almost sounds like a bit of debris is plugging up a main jet on one of the carbs, pop the carbs off and drain the bowls into a clean glass container, see if you get dirt it doesnt take much to plug a jet off.
Keep us posted on how you make out

Re: 50 HP. Mercury

Kiekhaeferscure
Thanks for the info. I pulled the three carbs cleaned out the bowls & found no dirt or debris. But what I did find was that carb #1 only had about 1 tablespoon full of gas in it, the other two were full of gas. The float was good, no leaks no dirt in the line or in the carb. What I did find was that the mounting bolts on the #1 carb were only finger tight. In fact the carb left little or no impression on the gasket, I figure it may have never been tightened since it was new. I didn't get a chance to take it for a test run & it may be several weeks before I do. But when I do I will let you know the results.

Thanks Again
Mrfixitcr

sounds like it was a friday afternoon engine .better play safe and check every bolt and nut in sight.a loose carb is bad enough but fuel leaking on eletrics could be worse so check everything for tightness and use stud lock where you can.

A loose carb will make it run crappy but it seems like it would still have gas in it?

Prolinews
I had the same thoughts, but I couldn't find any dirt, debris or anything else causing a blockage or limiting the flow of gas to the #1 carb.

Re: 50 HP. Mercury

The # 1 carb that was loose & had very little gas in the bowl was the problem. I took the boat for a test run today & it ran great. I could never get more than 4200 rpms when it was, as I thought running good, today I cut it back after topping 5300 rpms. I went about 10 miles & it did not loose rpms once.

I would like to thank the following for their help, your input helped me solve my motor problem.

prolinews
phillnjack
kiekhaeferscurse

Thank You
Mrfixitcr
