have a 50 hp mercury that is not firing, checked the kill switch, and ignition switch, also checked rectifier that seems to be bad, no reading on my meter at all when checking the rectifier. Will this cause it not to fire or will it be something else?

That's a 1986, 45hp ELO (Electric start, long shaft, oil injected).... Also known as the 'Classic 50'...

Quite a few things will be stopping spark. Dead switch box(possible), dead stator (possible), dead trigger (possible, but less likely). You do need a DVA meter to properly test the outputs. The one thing that will not stop spark is a dead rectifier.... Completely different circuit.

Here's a (very old) link to a way to build your own DVA from a few small parts and a cheap meter.....

http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engin...meter?t=374544

The stator has 2 sections, a low speed and a high speed. If you're not sparking at cranking, then it would be the low speed stator at fault (if it's the stator). I'll dig up the drawings and diagnostics and post them here for you...

thanks for the input, i took electronics in high school, building a DVA is no problem.
