I think I have covered most points to get a vegie (or any garden for that matter) garden started.
We will call this Stage 1.
Have I missed anything before I move on to Stage 2?
Is every one happy/confident they can get a garden "prepared" for planting.
If I don't get any responses then I will take it everyone is happy.
Cheers
Phillip

this may not be the place but i use an old fashon bathtub with the legs (bearclaws) i think its called, i painted it hundergreen and julie and i grow the biggest bestest tomatos in this thing. she plants flowers around it and we have pepper plants around it so it looks really cool to us lol but i swear the tomatoes are huge. this tub was given to her by her late grandma ya'll think she has anything to with them maters?

the tub sounds pretty good but what about other physical layouts? i haven't picked a spot where i'm going to plant yet so size and shape concerns would be good. is square best?

also, i read the one about layering papers or cardboard. i'm guessing it would be good to have some sort of border for the outer edge...is stone ok? any advantage to raised beds? fencing tips?

it'll be my first garden. thx

The bathtub sounds a great idea.
Remember when using containers, they must have drainage,(holes to let water out) and they are 100% reliant apon you for watering.
They look really good with flowers planted in them, especially annuals (plants that last either for or less than 1 year).
Remember annual are probably the most colourful plants you can grow, eg petunias, marigold, dianthus, lobellia, allysum etc.
A perennial is a plant that goes on year after year. Some may actually seems as if they die in the winter, but come back next spring.
An edge is always useful. It gives a defined area between garden and surounding area.
Use any material you have available, plus looks good to yourself. It also helps to stop encroaching grass from growing in to the garden itself. It also gives good grainage.
Fencing tips....if this is a fence around part of a garden, then consider making it a dual purpose fence. By that, make it with a material like chicken netting so you can grow something like peas or runner beans etc up it. Or if more solid, make it so you can grow say grape vines along it.
That way it will give shelter to your garden, look attractive and be productive.
Cheers
Phillip
