HELP!! My buddy and I recently put in a reman 351 in our Chris Craft. Unfortunately, we went through 3 starters already, and the boat hasn't made into the water yet. What could be the problem? He's thinking the flex plate/flywheel is on backwards. Is that possible? What else should I be looking for? This is the last piece of the puzzle. Thanks!

My bad. When I refered to the last piece of the puzzle I meant this is the last thing we have to fix. (famous last words)

When it turns over it just doesn't sound right, like the gears aren't meshing. It will run, but we only get a few tries before the starter gears are shredded and is no good. We are planning to pull the engine to inspect the ring gear, but was wondering what others had to say first.

The engine is out and a it has a few chipped teeth on the ring gear. Would that make my engine sound horrible when attempting to start it? We are left scratching our heads as to what else it could be.
