ok, i have read many posts on this site and have done the the following, first background info. bought boat this winter and started it yesterday, cranked and ran good, went to put in forward and made a grinding or clicking noise, thought maybe shift cable, i unhooked shift cable at engine and manually shifted , still made noise, but noticed noise was coming from lower on outdrive, turned engine off and left in gear, and turned prop, it turned one way smooth with a little noise and turned other way with clicking noise, iam at end of my knowledge base any help would be awesome, thanks

Re: 5.7 alpha one outdrive problems

I am sure you will get lots of response and some follow-up questions, like: Are you running on muffs? Are you trying to run your prop out of the water? When you turned it off and left it in gear, was it foward or reverse? Which way did you then try to turn the prop? (with shifter in forward, the prop should turn clockwise with a ratcheting (clicking) feel, and should lock when trying to turn in reverse (counterclockwise). Sounds like there's no gear damage in the lower, but I think we need more data.

running prop out of water with muffs on and water flowing, it was in forward gear when tried to turn prop, update while in forward gear when turn clockwise with a ratcheting sound, when turn clockwise will catch sometimes, mean i will jiggle prop and will catch then spin clockwise and spin counterclockwise will sometimes catch. check oil fill cap very little metal.

Ayuh,... When runnin',... With a Brisk shift, it should clunk once, 'n be in forward.... Ditto for reverse...

If it Don't, 'n ya can't manually shift it at the shift switch by hand like ya did,....
Ya probably need a New lower cable, 'n at look around at the rest of the drive...
