I picked up this engine that I was told is in good condition, but it starts on the first pull, smokes like crazy then dies. I'm using a 50-1 oil/gas mix. Is that too much oil? Also it has a lean/rich knob that seems to have no effect. Thanks for any info or help

That is not enough oil. You are supposed to be using 24:1 on that motor. It is supposed to smoke, but will be a lot better after you get it running right.

If it is like most 1961 OMC motors, it has bad coils. At least that is the first thing I would look at, after checking the compression to make sure you have something to fix.

I think you have a stuck float or may be overchoking it.

Ditto on 24:1.
