Re: 5.0Gi Volvo SX performance options

I know it will, I've read your story on how you worked through the issues in stuffing that big block in your Nova, and enjoyed the story and learned alot, I've already got a new 350 long block on a stand, also haven't seen any used 454's around here, but I haven't looked that hard, but I've got a question for you, do you have issues of the pawls breaking loose from throttling down from a highspeed run, of let's say 50 MPH, mine started to do that just recently, I've replaced the pawls last year and set the up as per the volvo manual, worked fine till I changed the lower unit. I don't have power trim and I just use the smart tabs,

If the "paw's" you are talking about is the motor mounts. No I have not had any issues but at the same time I rebuilt the stringer mounts 2 summers ago and then had to build them up again for the 454.
I am here for answers. What else you got?

I was refering to the pawls that lock down the outdrive, I kinda figured that I'd have to redo the blocking for the motor mounts and the housing cover

Sorry, brain fart. Was up to 4am last night. Still early for me.:D

The Paw was no big deal. I just don't throw it in reverse at anything above a idle but you shouldn't do that anyway and I wouldn't being my drive is 35+ years old. Not saying when in gear you cant give it the gas it needs and I use reverse all the time. I back off sand bar's or the beach and never give a second thought. The key is, keeping the idle rpm's as low as possible. They are now around 750rpm's but the wild ***** Mopar I had before it was 800+rpm's so it should be good.

Shave weight, increase HP. If money is not a major problem do this, get a 350 short block, must have a good forged crank, and pistons, you can buy a crate marine short block, or if you have the skills, put one together yourself using top shelf components. The 305 Isn't a bad engine it is just limited by it's small bore, just not as efficiant at making power. Get a set of Aluminum heads, and use the rest of the components off your old motor, fuel system water pump, and all the acc. will bolt right on the 350 block, including the damper and flywheel. You can then sell your 305 long block to someone who needs it. You can easily make over 300 HP and lots more torgue than the 305 and that should get close to 60 MPH with a load on. Never leave well enough alone, when you can make it faster!
