Ok, new to boat ownership with my purchase of an '07 Regal 2000 with the 270HP 5.0GXi engine and SX drive. Boat runs great, but would like to help out the performance when loaded with folks and gear. What options are there? pros/cons/costs/potential top speed or hp increase?

Thanks,
DJ

As far as hp, thats about as much as you are going to get out of a 5.0l Look into prop changes and/or tabs to help your heavy load situations.

What are the gains with a through hull exhaust? Not worth the price on this unit?

Without changing the exhaust manifolds you won't find much if any performance increase. Even if you do the complete exhaust upgrade you are only going to gain minimum improvements, 1 to 2 mph top end, maaaybe.

The best improvement would come from upgrading to a DP (duel prop) drive.

A stainless prop would be a good start, do not expect huge gains but there is a performance increase.

Re: 5.0Gi Volvo SX performance options

I have a 2008 2000 with the 5.7 GiSX 280 Hp and 14 hrs. What kind of speed are you seeing? I'm getting 54mph with full tank, lots of gear and 4 people. I think I'm over proped with 14.5X21 @4600 max rpm. Thinking of going to a 14.5X19 to get to 5000rpm.

P.S. I absolutely love the boat. All my research on iboats sure paid off.

I'm getting 54 by the onboard speedo at around 5000rpm, but only with 2 people in the boat. Full fuel, 6 people & dog, some gear and it'll do 46-48 at around 4700rpm. We love the boat also. Mainly got it because it was a great deal on a great boat. As for the prop, it's the stocker, not even sure what it is at this point.

Don't want to hot rod it. just wanted to know if there are some performance gains to be had outside the engine, such as exhaust, air delivery, etc. Not having done these things before, I just wanted to get a feel for what gains they might produce.

Just a FYI (or you could read my website). I went from a hopped up Mopar 360ci to a semi hopped up 454ci. Total speed gain was 10mph. Speed is not cheap on the water.
As for your prop. Up or down in pitch you will pay on the other end. Up and you lose take off bite and smaller you will lose top end. I would stay where you are at and enjoy what you have.

Why can't you people just enjoy a nice cruise? If you want speed, get a jet ski. Leave the boat alone so everyone can enjoy a nice QUIET ride on the water.

It cracks me when I see a boat with a loud exhaust.....one word comes to my mind at that moment..."redneck".

Never once said I wanted a loud exhaust. Not sure with boats (Silent Choice isn't quiet?), but with autos a more freely flowing exhaust, does not necesssarily mean loader. I actually am annoyed at the open header folks I can hear miles away and can't wait until they crack down on them!

Oh, and I have two nice quiet 4-stroke Sea Doos already, no need for more. However, at times I would like the boat to approach their speed.

Bottom line, is that I am interested in possible performance gains and some folks are providing those sort of responses. You are not, so why are you responding???

Ayuh,.......
'cause it's an Open Forum,+ We Can.................:D

There's really no Easy HP gains to be had,......
Volvo has already Tweeked that little motor,.... Alot.....

With Boats,.......
There's No replacement for Displacement.......

A 350 or Larger motor is about the Only real Option there is........

Re: 5.0Gi Volvo SX performance options

I would play with a new prop, a stainless 19P or 20P would gain you some extra top end. From your post though is seems like you are looking for more hole shot under load. That will actually require a smaller pitch prop. I went with a 17P 4 blade stainless prop on my VP 4.3L on a 20 foot boat and it now leaps out of the water and I can still top out at around 45MPH. It is all about finding the right prop, this is the one thing you can add that will give you an appreciable difference for the cost. Volvo does not put a shiny SS 4 blade prop on the drive from the factory because it would simply drive the cost up and most people don't care about the prop until they want to drag a 280 pound person out of the water on a wake board.

Messing with props and getting your WOT rpm below specs is going to cost you an engine.

Re: 5.0Gi Volvo SX performance options

I've replaced my lower gearcase with a DP, on my 280 drive, the the differance is pretty interesting, the issue of getting on plane, solved, even with my fat friends telling me how foolish at my fiddling with the " old volvo drive ", they seem to forget how many times they get towed in, looking at the Old Volvo drive with their Mercruiser's trashed out, over heated, broken couplers etc., anyways changing the lower unit with trim tabs will make a huge differance, you won't see massive speed gains, but the throttle response is very crisp, fuel comsumption is down somewhat, steering is easier, same speed with lower Rpm's a big plus, this winter out goes the 305 and a 350 goes in the old 19' POS Bayliner.
