Just wondering. I have a 2013 5.0MPI with CATs. Its a bit small for the boat. I was wondering a few things.

1. How much would the current motor be worth if I pulled it and sold it with the cats and manifolds (I would remove the bolt on stuff for the new motor)

2. If I bought a 5.7MPI with the proper ECU would it be just plug and play?

Ayuh,.... #1,... Donno, long blocks run 'bout $1,500.00,.... used slightly less,... sell the manifolds separately,...

#2,... Ayuh, a Bobtail replacement motor is generally speakin', a plug, 'n play operation,...

I figured if I did the logblock thing I would be looking at $1,500 plus manifolds/risers and ECU

Re: 5.0 to 5.7

Could I just get a 5.7 long block like the one below and swap my existing stuff on to it? I would need a new ECU seeing as mine is for a 5.0 with cats and I would go with just normal manifolds and riseres. What about the bravo gear ratio would that need to be changed too?

Ayuh,.... Generally speakin', the 305, 'n 350 use the same gear ratios,...

Might have to change the prop,..... or not,...

Wont make a lot of difference if any if its going in the Bayliner 255CR. Thats a big ol' cruiser. Save your money, the small benefit isn't worth what you'd spend. Unfortunately Bayliner commonly sells underpowered boats.

Yes they do. The base engine in the 28 footer is the 5.7 with B3. That thing has to be a dog. I think this boat would be much better with a 5.7. Currently I can hit low 40's at WOT but I never run her that fast. Cruising in her is around 25-30 depending on conditions. Issue is getting her up on plain. You have a few adults sitting in the back of the cockpit and it takes forever.

Have the adults go forward to get you a drink when you get on plane

I tend to agree that going up to a 5.7 won't be that much of an improvement as compared to the cost and effort. I'd be looking at the 496, but that too is in another league, cost-wise.

It seems you most likely would plan on doing the engine switch yourself. But just in case you weren't, I thought I had better point out that if you had planned on buying a new OEM engine from one of the big engine manufacturers like Volvo, Merc, etc. and had one of the manufacturing "dealerships" for said big engine manufacturer sell and install the new engine for you. There are some new EPA legal rules that you would need to be aware of since you have a new engine made after 2010 with emissions control.

Though is a Volvo service bulletin, the link below is about the only decent reference that I could find to help give you an ideal of why I brought it up. Mercruiser and other big named manufacturers would have to undergo the same concept. I do not know if the same type of rules have hit the small remanufacturing companies yet or not. I know some of the small high performance engine manufacturers in California (of course) have spent the time and money to become EPA compliant.

Note: To get the link below to work, you will have to remove the _ between the T and S.

It won't be "Much better" with a 5.7. You can try a "Stroker" motor which is big block power in a small block chevy.

By the way, speed in the 40s for that is really good! I guess it's a dog out of the hole, so why don't you try different props first? Try one pitch down, see what happens.

I guess it sounds like its not worth the cost. I will wait and see what happens if I ever need to replace the motor.

Is that a 5.0 with a Bravo on the back? Bravo I ?

Re: 5.0 to 5.7

It's a b3

With a Bravo III and an anemic hole-shot, (and you can achieve MAX RPM at WOT) you're way underpowered like someone said earlier.

If it will not make MAX RPM at WOT, (NOT just in the range....but MAX) then you're under-propped and you will improve hole-shot if you switch to a lower pitch prop-set.

A 5.0L engine on that size boat is probably not enough.......

Sorry about that......

I was reading up on trim tabs. Perhaps I should trim with the tabs and from hole shot not have the drive trimming the boat too.

I don't think trim tabs are going to help in your case..........

Are you starting out with the drive nearly all the way down (IN)?

Yup, something to keep in mind if/when you go to upgrade to a bigger boat. IIRC, your boat is fairly heavy, being a cruiser. I would be thinking of something in the 496/8.1 range with a boat like that. If you trade up to a 27-28 footer someday, think about twins.

Not worth even considering on that boat. If you need more power, you should be looking at a completely different boat. A bit surprised the power issue was not noticed at sea trial/time of purchase. If it was questionable then, why did you buy it instead of something with more power ?

Re: 5.0 to 5.7

I would break my boating down in to this

80% just the wife and me
15% the wife, me and one of the wife's friends
5% The wife, me and a family of 4 so a total of 6

Its really only an issue when in use for the 5% but I like to tinker and if I could swap it out for a 5.7 and have it only cost me about $2K after selling off my current 5.0 then I would do it as a winter project next winter. With that said I won't be heart broke if I end up with a cracked block. It would be a great time to put a 350mag in to the boat.

I just like to tinker with things, always have.
