'98 Mountaineer V6, 80K miles, 5 speed automatic.
The 4WD High & Low dash indicators started to intermittently blink (at the same time) weather I'm stopped at a light or at highway speeds. They seem to blink for a few seconds then stay off for several minutes. This is happening on dry roads. If I switch to 4WD the indicator does not come on. (I almost never switch to 4WD because I beleive it shifts into it automatically when it needs it.)
Any suggestions?

Yes call the dealership. Your actuator is not working and they generally revert to 2 wd for safety. Even if you swith into 4wd you probably don't have it.

The flashing indicates it is in a default mode.

Bob

I agree with bob there is a fault with the system. My blazer has the push button 4wheel drive and I cant stand it. It never wants to lock in its so temperamental. a few times I needed it it wouldnt work and I got stuck. Now my durango has the shifter for it and you can feel it lock in.

That's REAL helpful.

levittownnick,

Bob VT is right. You have an actuator issue. It could be something as simple as an unplugged connector or corrosion.

You can check those yourself. Just slide under the vehicle and have a look around the transfer case. Unplug and replug all the connectors.

"That's REAL helpful."

DJ, you are right, if he had a Land Cruiser he wouldn't be worrying about what's wrong with an American made POS.

SW, you're an American, right? If so, that doesn't say much for your job skills does it?

Re: 4WD High & 4WD Low Blinking

Come on DJ. My initial comment was a jest. However, now that you mention it, I am self employed and paid cash for my two Land Cruisers. This was after I bought a 1999 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 TRD extended cab Limited, (paid cash for that too) and found out that it was an American made pile of junk, so I sold it and got a Japanese made Cruiser. So, I guess my job skills are ok since I seem to have plenty of $$$, no car payment, and vehicles that are very low maintenance.

The big three refuse to bui;ld anything but junk. In fact, after owning an American made Toyota, I don't think the US has any business building cars, because every thing built in America is junk and I'm not spending my hard earned money on it.

Now, let's see, it's 11:00 Teusday morning, I think I'll go fishing. Then I might go to mom and dad's to mess around in the garden. Yep, I work two weeks each year, and I also serve papers to have somethig to do, and do what I want to with my 50 weeks off each year. So who has the job skills?

I had a 94 explorer.....same set up. It's the actuator. $300 to replace at a 4 wheel drive shop...not the dealer.....

Formula1974,

My wife owns a print brokerage and we do one print a year which takes about two weeks. That's her two weeks of work. I do all of the marketing, so for two weeks each year before we go to print, I get on the phone and contact companies that we haven't printed for in the past and try to get them use us. The stuff is printed and shipped by one of the printing houses we use, and we are done.

Then, since I got bored I started a process server business. I serve maybe 20 to 50 papers a month. Most of it is collections actions from credit card companies, but sometimes I get some real interesting papers for lawsuites that range into the millions of dollars. Those folks always try to hide and I always find them. Except this last guy. I had to do a corporate serve on his corporation because he disappeared. I think he went to his condo in South Florida.

Anyhoo, mostly I just goof off and do what I want to. I have been very truly blessed by God, because none of this would have happened without His deep and abiding grace.

so I sold it and got a Japanese made Cruiser.
Had to tow 3 of them off the lake last year.

Actually the American made Toyota Camry and Corolla's are very good and some of the most reliable vehicles built which is why they have become the number one seller of Cars.

Man if only I were that blessed...LOL

I once had a Made in Japan 1994 Toyota truck, i bought it new and after three years and 78K miles coolant leaked into the engine, and the motor overheated
Three months after i had it fixed, the engine started knocking.
I decided to trade it in and got me a Made in America Ford F150, it is now 5 years old with 146K miles and the only thing ever done to it was regular oil changes every 5K miles, changed the plugs twice, fuel filter once, and it's on its second set of tires.

How about that for low maintenance?

Re: 4WD High & 4WD Low Blinking

Sorry you guys haven't had my experience with with Japanese trucks. But I have, and (as well as many others), had crappy experience with American made Junk. Thats why For stock is in the toilet and GM is laying off another 25,000 lazy f's that can't build anything worth driving (the way I drive). I punish my vehicles and play hard and nothing made in America can handle it. F-350? Yeah right. I was gonna buy one of those, till thier transmissions stared falling out them. My brothers Dakota fell apart at 90,000 miles. I gave away our old 1986 4Runner with 300,000+ on the odometer and that old tank was still running strong.

I know I won't change your opinions, so go ahead and blow your money on garbage, and I will continue to put mile after trouble free mile on my Land Cruisers ( we have three now and and are buying a fourth, the kids need cars too).

I got under it and opened and closed the connector several times. That didn't help. The next step is to take it to the dealer.
Thanks to all that tried to help.
Nick

If punishing the truck is driving to the store for milk for mommy yes your Land Cruiser "glorified Isuzu Trooper" will work just fine.

If you want a real Truck then your options are GM,Ford,Dodge.
Some day the foreigners may have a truck that's not just for soccer moms. :) :) :) :) :)

I have to laugh at the comments made by SoulWinner, theres a reason why construction companys use GM/Dodge/Ford for their fleet trucks and not a Toyota, they get beat on day in and day out hauling 24/7 and still reach 200,000+ miles.

Must be amazing to be so brand loyal, since you have 50 weeks off a year do some research before you open your mouth and look like a total moron.

Re: 4WD High & 4WD Low Blinking

Plenty of 20+ year old GM, Ford and Dodge trucks rolling on the roads of the harsh Northeast. Haven't seen an old Japanese truck yet. Not even those little toy pickups that were once somewhat popular around here. I don't think I've ever seen one being used commercially ever. Certainly never ever saw one plowing...
